The first high resolution X-ray structures of membrane-bound proteins were presented at the Bioenergetics Gordon Conference, which was important in stimulating research in the area. It was able to focus the science on electron and proton transport systems which enabled many important breakthroughs in this area.
- Gary Cecchini
The Radiation Chemistry GRC drew participants from chemistry, physics, and biology, on both the experimental and the theoretical side. The size and format of the conferences were the most effective of the many kinds of conferences I have participated in. Especially productive were the long discussion sessions.
- Gordon R. Freeman
My participation in the GRC had great impacts in identifying and stimulating new research areas and establishing new links with academic and industrial researchers in polymer science and technology. The friendly atmosphere of the GRC undoubtedly aided in the achievement of important goals.
- Emo Chiellini
The Mechanisms of Toxicity GRC was the actual breeding ground for the development of the Society of Toxicology, now one of the most successful scientific societies in the United States and recognized as the home for excellence in toxicological research and expertise.
- Richard Hines
The field of molecular clusters was brought together in part by the Molecular and Ionic Clusters GRC established in 1990 with Will Castleman as chair. Its first meeting in Volterra, Italy was superb - complete with great memories of good science, Roman ruins, excellent food, and wonderful camaraderie.
- Timothy Zwier
The GRC on Laser Diagnostics in Combustion provides a unique forum for multidisciplinary interaction. Combustion is an academic component of mechanical engineering, but fundamental studies use significant chemistry and physics. The GRC and its "off the record" policy has enabled candid industrial participation.
